Multimedia in cartography is considered as the special computer technology allowing at compiling of geographical maps and atlases to transform them into a new kind of cartographical product, with qualitatively new opportunities, and also allowing the user in an interactive mode to receive as much final information as possible   on mapped territory as a whole or in more details about separate objects (phenomena) of the territory in full.

On the basis of the executed scientific researches, analyzing and generalizing concept « multimedia in cartography » (A.M.Berljant, V.S.Tikunov, A.E.Ivanenko , E.N.Lapina , etc.), we shall give a conclusion-definition: « Multimedia cartography” as the combination of various methods, receptions of cartography and multimedia, program and the means, allowing to carry out integration in cartographic model another information in the form of the text, a soundtrack, schedules, photos, video plots, figures, animation, three-dimensional models. Thus the volume of the information on cartographic objects extends and interactive interplay of users with cartographical product is provided.

The major advantage of multimedia cartography (MC) is the sanction of the "eternal" contradiction in cartography between an amount of information and readership of a map.

At creation of a map or the atlas with application of multimedia technology (ÌÒ), such contradictions do not arise, as the hypertext principle of information viewing allows to move ahead deep into from the general to the particular; deep into in the additional information under the discretion authors of the atlas or a map and further to the Internet-resources which basically have no restriction.

In 2005-2006 two electronic atlases «Love and Know Your Home» for high school: Of Khanty-Mancy autonomous region and Novosibirsk area with use of multimedia cartography are created in SGGA on faculty of cartography and geoinformatics under direction of Dr.Sci.Tech. Professor D.V. Lisitskiy.

The executed scientific researches and practical development of ÌÒ enable in a new fashion to look at essence of a cartographic image and on the general theory of symbols systems.

Improvement of a map language with MT application allows using more full the three basic making semiotics principles.

From semantics position, MT application allows to correlate unequivocally symbols to displayed objects (phenomena) as follows: The symbol on a map can have direct similarity to the designated object by means of the integrated information in the form of multimedia files, thus representing in more details separate objects (phenomena) of territory.

From syntactic position, MT application allows to change key rules of delivering up to the user the semantic information of objects (phenomena) by addition hyperlinks to system of multimedia information other forms symbols.

From pragmatists position, MT application allows to strengthen information value of symbols and ways of mapping, expanding an amount of information about objects (phenomena) by means of: Video plot, soundtrack, animations.
